Troop trees - Top: Horse Archers, Bottom: Heavy Infantry
Basically thought I would want to play Dickplomacy with maximum immersion ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). I ended up coming up with the idea of making an Amazoness faction. Knowing that the troops wouldn't have any armor at all, I thought I'd give them really good shields and shield ability, kind of like naked spartans. I thought I'd want to make them based of real Amazoness warriors, which I assumed would be like female spartans. I also gave them a horse archer line, to give them a ranged option and because it looks cool.
Eventually I thought that it would be a good idea to give the more elite units actual armor, but the armor is only the "Medium custom" kind for the higher level troops. Unfortunately, Dickplomacy makes the more elite units more older, so the elite units are all grannys, but its alright, it makes sense that they'd have all that experience fighting all those years. At least the helmets cover up their faces a bit. It makes more sense for the fresher, younger fighters to not have armor for maximum aesthetics ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
The custom armor in this mod is very nice when it comes to your troops wearing it (besides the obvious reason). Its so randomised that it makes each unit very unique in their appearance, unlike most units in the game only have slight variations in how they look.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with my custom Amazoness troops. I don't think they are overpowered, and it makes the game more balanced and immersive. It actually adds some challenge seeing as my low level troops are very weak and don't have any armor. The archers need protection from all directions, and the basic infantry needs to be protected from the flanks. Because I didn't spend "points" on much armor for my troops, I got to spend a lot more on their weapons, so this faction has weaker armor but stronger weapons (mainly bows and shields) compared to other factions.
Troop Trees
Peasant
This consists of:
- Amazoness Tribeswoman
Basically a naked amazoness tribeswoman but with a powerful bow, even at a low level.
Top (Ranged)
These consist of ranged units:
- Amazoness Archer
- Amazoness Veteran Archer
- Amazoness Horse Archer
- Amazoness Huntress
- Amazoness Headhuntress
The theme of the ranged line was primarily focused on a "support" ranged line, i.e. the archers, that would eventually upgrade into the "elite" units, the horse archers. Basically the inspiration here were primitive tribal warriors from the Amazon jungle, that would only fight with bows and would skirmish, rather than do pitched battles.
Regarding making these custom troops in the custom troop trees, the archers have been optimised to have no armor in order to maximise offense. Compared to other archers from other factions at the same level, these amazoness will hit harder and more accurately.
Then down the line they get horses and become deadly horse archers. Because they can continue upgrading more than other troops, by the time they're maxed out, they are actually really powerful archers. These armored horse archers (the Headhuntress) are no joke on the battlefield. Also the horse archers are given some two handed axes (polearms) as their melee weapon, as it was stated that Amazoness warriors actually used axes.
Bottom (Infantry)
These consist of ranged units:
- Amazoness Spearwoman
- Amazoness Veteran Spearwoman
- Amazoness Warrior
- Amazoness Veteran Warrior
- Amazoness Hoplite
The theme of the infantry line was focused on pitched battles, that would make up the bulk of the forces, kind of like the hoplite phalanx formation that the Greeks liked to use. Spartans were also an inspiration for this line, thus I initially thought to make them like naked spartans but with shields, but then I had to give the elite units some armor. The weapons they use are spears and shields. They are also given a set of javelins to harass the enemy and take out their shields before they engage in melee combat.
The infantry may be somewhat weaker (less armor and strength) individually compared to infantry from other factions, but what they lack in individual strength, they make up for in their ability to work in a formation. Their added javelins can help weaken enemy shields.
Also Huskarl (the largest shields) are a must. The lack of armor means big shields are needed to protect the troops from arrows.
Strengths
- Unique aesthetics ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Strong weapons (especially the bow)
- Strong shields
- Strong offensive abilities
- Strong overall ranged capability (bows from archers and cavalry, javelins from infantry)
- Low tier troops actually hit hard because of their strong weapons
- A good view to look at whilst commanding your troops from behind ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- Heavy infantry are very strong at tanking arrows from the enemy
- Horse archers are the strongest compared to kherghit horse archers
- Unique playstyle different from playing other factions
Weaknesses
- Low tier troops need protection due to having no armor
- Armor is relatively weak even for higher tier troops, compared to other units (~40 armor body, compared to swadian knights of ~55)
- Shields only protect forwards; spears only point forwards; getting flanked is no good
- Infantry sort of sucks in sieges, tend to get outclassed by men
- Too much screaming in battle (could be a pro)
- Hard to play because you can only play with 1 hand
Final notes
I guess this faction idea could make for a queen/matriarch playthrough, but I played it as a male who just happens to be the king of these amazonesses.
I'm actually having fun in this playthrough, its challenging enough and its not brainded as running all Swadian cavalry and pressing f1>f3. The fact that this faction has its strengths and weaknesses makes it balanced with other factions and I have to play smart.
