In 3.8 Blackheart Squires and Blackheart Knights were what I considered a peasant's knight - just a generally weak choice to choose but if it came down to it could fill a niche roll in any mercenary company. In 3.9, Blackhearts have become serious contenders for the title of knight tbh. Now buffed with some of the best, if not the best, armor and weapons in the game (Hawkstorm bows and Runed Bastard Swords/Pendorian Knight Armor etc), Blackhearts are a serious threat on the battlefield when facing off against bandit and red brotherhood parties.
Furthermore, they are now readily available once you've reached level 20 thanks to a new feature. As of 3.9 you can now ask any companion to recruit a few troops to your company, and each one will recruit from a pool of 3 choices. For Sigismund Sinclair, his are Rogue Blackheart Squire, Rogue Blackheart Knight, and Hero Adventurer. While you are most likely to receive Squires (35%, 25%, 10% respectively with 30% no recruits), Blackheart Squires are quickly promoted.
I was inspired to tell you all after witnessing a single Blackheart Knight get separated during a siege on the attacking side. I watched him handle a crowd of ravenstern troops all by his lonesome (about 7 mid tier archer units), and continue to plow through anyone who came his way. While I no doubt that the single reinforcement he received, a Valkyrie, was essential to his continued survival now that the Kiersguards were out and about, I am utterly impressed by the Blackheart's prowess.
This is also a warning for those of you who are just now downloading PoP 3.9 - they're no joke anymore, and come about day 100~ (or when fighting bandit infestations in villages), you might face a much more deadly foe on the battlefield.
