TF2 was for a time, the FPS class based multiplayer to play, and it's impact on online culture cannot be overstated, beyond just the game itself but the comedic culture that sprang from and was built around it was and still is, titanic and a landmark in Internet history.
However in recent years TF2 has fallen into neglect and abandonment as it became obvious that the game is shortstaffed and, due to Valve's unique management, few people are apparently keen to work on and upkeep an eleven year old mess of code and balances.
The few people working on the game (estimated to be between 8-15+) have tried to push through a few updates but each one more poorly implemented than the last.
Matchmaking was and still is, an abject disaster that still hasn't been fixed or properly balanced as certain game elements are so hardbaked that it'd upset the entire meta if they were implemented. A certain class was changed to the point where they were broken and then had to be changed again to fix these issues.
And all the while people have been waiting over 500 days at this point, for the next big class update (The Heavy Update), with no signs of it coming in the forseeable future.
And the worst part about all of this is the complete radio silence from the dev team about what's going on. There's not even a confirmation that anyone's working on the update itself, it's been total radio silence for over a year, the longest radio silence in this game's decade long history.
There are a multitude of maps made by the community that the devs could add but for some reason, won't, and then refuse to actually communicate about what they're doing or why they're not doing anything as of yet.
If there was at least ONE update on how things are a month, the fanbase would be far less fatigued, despondent and anxious, but for the time being, the dev team of TF2 is MIA to the fanbase.
And this brings me to Bannerlord.
Yes, it's a game that's been delayed a few times since originally announced in 2013. Yes, that's frustrating.
But what do i see? The dev team actually communicating with the fans, and showing their progress on a WEEKLY basis, to make sure that fans know that not only are they working on the game but they're working on it to be the best possible quality it can be.
And they're also not shy to admit that yeah, sometimes the game will need to be delayed in order to make sure that the game is actually properly running. I'd rather have them take a decade to make the game than have them shovel out a project that is not only half-unfinished, but came at the expense of the well-being of the people who made it on crunch time.
Yes, it is sad and even frustrating that it's not on the horizon just yet, but it's refreshing to see a dev team that at the very least, cares to communicate with their fanbase to let them know where they are and what they can expect.
It's certainly far better than the total radio silence that Valve is famous for.
