What is fast mode?

My Little Warband weapons selection:

I'm trying to make a faction using my little warband based off my African armies of the 18th-19th centuries and was looking for advice on weapons; I want to have a unit that uses a short spear with long blade similar to Zulu weaponry and basically I could make a custom weapon that meets my criteria or just give them heavy lancea andale them hold fire. But is there anyway to use custom weapons with MLW? There doesn't appear to be, but maybe someone else knows more than I doon the subject.
