[AWoIaF] Can you obtain any unique Valyrian blades?

Hey. So after stabbing the Night's Watch in the back, I engaged in battle with the Lord Commander and was met by a pretty weak force. The only person who managed to kill anyone on the opposite side was Jon Snow with Longclaw, which to my surprise, could be picked up by me.

Is there any way to permanently obtain it? I read somewhere that you could force prisoners to give you their Valyrian blade, but I'm unsure if that was in ACOK or AWoIaF.
