[AWOIAF] Increasing the effectively of spies?

Hey there,

Been enjoying AWOIAF as of late, around ~500 days in and have just pledged to Aegon. I've been trying to use spies to avoid the bloodbath sieges, however they seem very ineffective. Most of the ones I have sent have been caught and killed before they were of any use, and the one that actually got through was killed when I tried to cause dissent.

So I suppose my question is, is there any way to make them more effective or is it designed to be high risk, high reward?
