What should I do here?

I’m a vasal with the Khuzaits and I feel like the AI is not doing me any favors. We were at war with Sturgia and the Aserai at the same time which was a nightmare because everyone was running north and south. Not at war with Sturgia anymore but as soon as we made peace with them Monchug went and declared war with the western empire. I have 15 fiefs and they all border the western empire. So while every place I own is getting attacked Monchug and all the other assholes have been fighting over Shibal Zumr Castle. One side takes it and back and forth so most of the army is over there. And I’m in the same situation over at Onica castle. I own it but they take it and then I take it back. No one is getting anywhere. I want to go on the offensive and take Zeonica but I just don’t have enough people and I don’t think I can get anymore. Any tips for this stalemate? And where do all their troops keep coming from? Earning a banner by being knighted? [ACOK]

During one of my old playthroughs last year or the year before (I believe it was version 2.1, though possibly 3.0) I joined Stannis' retinue and served as a soldier for quite some time. I rose through the ranks until I was eventually promoted to knight (and later heavy knight). My character had started out lowborn, but after being knighted I was given the option to choose a banner! I thought that was a pretty cool touch.

I can't remember if I got it immediately, or if it was when I was on leave, or after I retired, or what, but I definitely got my banner this way. Anyway, on my current character (playing version 5.0), I tried to do the same again, but with Brynden "Blackfish" Tully as my commander. I made it to heavy knight before retiring, but this time I haven't been given the option to choose a banner.

My questions are:

  1. Anyone else ever earn a banner this way?

  2. Anyone know if it's a feature that's no longer offered?

  3. If I can't get it this way, anyone know if there's a way to get a banner without starting as a noble, swearing fealty, or starting a faction? I'm RPing as a hedge knight/tourney knight and I can't be tied down. I also don't want to just join a faction and immediately quit because it's a bit gamey and out of character (plus the relation loss). The debug menu doesn't seem to offer any way to choose a banner.

Back when Bannerlord was announced, I vaguely remember that, in the announcement thread, people were discussing the choice of the title "Bannerlord." Does anyone else remember that?
