I hate Horse Archers

Why did I decide to sign up with the northern empire as a Merc whilst they were fighting the Khuzaits? I've never fought them before and the one time I don't go with a decent horse rider because I want to fight on foot, this happens. Just got the game today, I’ve heard the mod community is really strong so

Performance shouldn’t be an issue, and I’m a playing war band. What mods should I use for my first play through? Maybe ones that expand the map or add more armor choices? Personal favorites? Thanks
