I hate Horse Archers

Why did I decide to sign up with the northern empire as a Merc whilst they were fighting the Khuzaits? I've never fought them before and the one time I don't go with a decent horse rider because I want to fight on foot, this happens. In Paradigm Worlds 1.0 how does the Fantasy Magioucracy faction work. Once I recruit troops from the village they can be upgraded?

All I get from the faction Fantasy Magioucracy in Paradigm Worlds is fantasy grunts and they can't be upgraded.
