How to rebuild a large army after defeat?

Title pretty much sums it up. How do i recoup my losses after I lose a battle? When i'm starting out, it's not that hard to rebuild my armies, but once i hit the points where I'm fielding 100+ man armies it seems to take forever. Is there some process i'm missing? I just run around to all the villages that like me and recruit volunteers. It might be the fact that I'm playing a "purist" army so i'm limited to just the villages in my faction.
