How to make your own Kingdom and not get screwed?

I swore to Battania but now I want to declare independence and make my own kingdom. I have 2 castles and a town atm. Annoyingly, they never give me any of the new settlements I conquer for them (which is part of why I want out).

However, while I can declare independence and make peace, I find myself with a super tiny kingdom and a max field army of 300 men if I combine my and my bro's forces (I could maybe make another party or two, but my manpower is still greatly limited. I feel like, if I try to attack my neighbors and claim more lands I'll get steamrolled.

Basically, I'm wondering how to bridge that gap between having a tiny 3-settlement kingdom, and having enough armies to plausibly fight the bigger factions?
