(Nova Aetas) Colonies doesn't seem worth it.

So I've just gotten my first colony going, reached stage 2 and gotten the trading post. It's an ivory island and when I got the first weeks produce It's value was

465 florins a piece. and that is with 6 plus 2 in trading.

I know in higher stages you get prestige for certain buildings but still, considering you have to sell the produce yourself it seems more worth to shoot cathars and buy property than colonizing.

Am I missing something? Advice is very welcome.
