Does anyone know how to stop my infantry from suiciding on ladders and towers in sieges?

I am trying to snag a castle in khuzait lands without vassalizing, so I need to do it fast and with minimal loses. But my infantry keeps braking shield wall formation to pick up ladders and gets killed in process. How do I stop my legionaries that I have carried from day zero from suiciding one by one? It is a torture to watch
