Unassigned clan role and perks

Does unselected roles automatically make the player assigned on that role along with the perks for that role?

Currently the only role assigned is the Scout role to a companion. So now I'm gaining exp for both roles: Quartermaster (Steward), Medic (Medicine), Engineer (Engineering). I just don't know if the perks for specific role really works for those unselected roles..

If it doesn't work, probably need to start a new campaign and just focus on weapon efficiency skills and leadership. hahaha
