How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Rapid Age Gain?

So I married Alcea?¿ Pretty sure that's her name, anyways, when I married her it said 22 and she was good looking. Then, we got married, I tried having babies, wasn't working. So I double checked and now it says she's 56 and she's as ugly as a horse. What do?
