so after a couple of my Sturgian Heavy Axemen got whacked by a few Looters in a 20 vs 20 fight.. (i kept my archers/cavalry/etc.. following me, while i watched). i'm starting to reassess if those Heavy Axemen aren't as awesome as i thought they were. :/
at first i tried to mix them up with half of them as Sturgian Heavy Spearmen, coz i want a few of them able to brace against cavalry charge. but then i took a look a the troop trees and there are several T5 soldiers that already has a spear + thrown weapon + shield + one hand weapon. giving them the versatility they need all in one package.
these are :
- Aserai Veteran Infantry : seem to have weak shields, which isn't great for tanking projectiles.
- Battanian Oathsworn : these guys have good armor and shields.
- Battanian Wildling : these guys are primarily skirmishers, but they have the same shields as the oathsworn. it's mostly their helmets/gloves/shoes that are weaker, and they use short axes as a one hand weapon.. which can be useful in sieges coz long weapons keep hitting the walls.
also, i'm unsure which of these guys can use brace mode with their spears (do i need to press a button or is it automatic? will they still use brace if i order them to form a shield wall?)
anyways, Battanian Oathsworn vs Battanian Wildling? if i fight them against each other 20 vs 20, which one will have higher chances of winning?
or is it a matter of setting? ie : in wide open space, oathsworns (or imperial legionnaires) with longer weapons have greater advantage, while wildlings (or sturgian heavy axemen) with their short axes gaining advantage in the tight hallways during a siege?
another bit of concern is their shields shape/hp.. since most of the time, their primary job is to soak up enemy projectiles. Sturgian Heavy Axemen is great at this job with their huge circle shields with high hp. but Battanian shield shape looks very thin.. how good are the Battanian Oathsworn/Wildlings at forming shield walls?
