There is much hate for Vlandia amongst my fellow Calradians. Let me take you and place you instead of at lance’s tip, instead into the Vlandian saddle. Many, if not all, the Vlandian lords have either impulsive, valorous, cruel, or closefisted, or a combination of these personality traits. This means that they will pursue gold, glory, and violence even against reason. Derthert, our cautious yet merciful lord. He doesn’t seek reproach, he does not move without thought. His barons are wily and voracious bastards and sons of mongrels. How can he reign in these lords with only a pittance of influence and a moderate income? He is a weak king at court but a strong king in battle. Perhaps, you may do him a favour and grant some quick and honourable deaths to his unruly barons who are cruel, impulsive, and closefisted.
Also: the wiki suggests that Derthert is based on Hugh Capet, king of the Franks
“One similarity between Derthert and Hugh Capet is their inability to gain the absolute loyalty of their vassals, which indicate their kingdoms' internal weaknesses. Hugh Capet's reign saw continual conflict between Eudes II (Odo II) and Fulk Nerra (Fulk III) of Anjou. Hugh Capet later supported Fulk Nerra. Subsequently, Eudes organized an unsuccessful conspiracy. The conspiracy was to kidnap Hugh Capet and his son, and deliver them to Otto III, the Holy Roman Emperor. Hugh Capet's lack of authority was epitomized when no one was punished for the conspiracy.[3] Similarly, Derthert is unable to keep his vassals in line.”
If this is the case, then this explains the Vlandian aggression that players despise so much. 9th-12th France was a wild time.
