Companion cavalry party - Where do they get the horses from

I would like to make a companion lead a clan party with all horse archers.

However, I'm not sure how they would upgrade the infantry to cavalry, or the cavalry to heavy cavalry. Do they need horses to upgrade troops, or do they 'cheat' and upgrade them without horses? Do they buy horses in towns, and if yes, which (since prices for especially war mounts can vary greatly)?

For the record: I use the Party AI Controls mod (https://www.nexusmods.com/mountandblade2bannerlord/mods/6218) to help my companion parties choose what troops to use.
