Recent naval battle crashes - no mods

My game has started crashing on just about every naval battle. I can get past the formation setting screen, and usually make it about halfway to the enemy ships before it crashes.

Never had this issue before, have done hundreds of naval battles over the last few months with only the rare crash here and there.

Has anyone else experienced this recently? It didn’t seem to start happening immediately after an update so I’m a bit confused.
