"Failed Load Order Operation" Error

Do retreated ally's skills apply during the battle? Can I let Jeremus run?

During a high risk battle I sometimes let Jeremus and deshavi retreat to keep them alive. Deshavi is okay since her skills are navigation skills, but I'm wondering whether jeremus's vital medical skills apply even if he is not on the battlefield.
