STUCK AT BEGINING OF WARSAILS

I escorted the merchants and fought off two ships in a sea battle . I'm on the Scourge of the Seas quest. It tells me to talk to Gunnar via a golden exclamation point. I go to talk to him and he says thst he is waiting on new." What do I do now? It seems as though there are no obvious prompts and the quest still exists. I need help specifically with advancing this quest...I can't believe I am stuck this early in the game. If anyone has any advice, I'm really desperate. Any way to put a companion/clan member in a town?

Basically the title. Accidentally took a family member into my party that was previously waiting in the keep of a settlement and I can't seem to be able to put them back. Can't seem to find an answer on this subreddit or google either, so maybe that feature just isn't there?
