How does F1+F4 “Advance” work? Is it direction the formation is facing or player?

I’ve tried using it a few times and it’s spun my formations around a few times and I can’t figure out how to predict which direction Advance will send troops. Is it based on where the player character is looking on the field? Where the flag icon is when ordering it?
