Need help with AWOIAF 2.0

I have over 3000 hours in warband so I'm an absolute veteran of the game. But with this mod i can barely get started, upgrade costs are so expensive i can't really find any early game way of getting money. Being a mercenary for a faction gives a measly amount of money that doesn't seem to scale with the quality or size of your army. I don't want to dump points into party skills like trading, because i can get a companion to do that later on. The small groups of peasants that i can get, can barely defeat the roaming outlaws and i just end up at an economic loss at the end of each battle.
