STUCK AT BEGINING OF WARSAILS

I escorted the merchants and fought off two ships in a sea battle . I'm on the Scourge of the Seas quest. It tells me to talk to Gunnar via a golden exclamation point. I go to talk to him and he says thst he is waiting on new." What do I do now? It seems as though there are no obvious prompts and the quest still exists. I need help specifically with advancing this quest...I can't believe I am stuck this early in the game. If anyone has any advice, I'm really desperate. Is this actually viable in this game

Granted I did not test this a lot.
I just tried out 4 custom battles with battanian archers 200 of them and set the enemy at a random composition with 200 enemies as well with me as a sargeant. first round against Sturgia, then against the Vladian, third match against the empire and the fourth match against 200 kuzait cavalry.

The thing is, the battanian archers won all of them without much trouble (like 100-150 troops left) is this actually a viable strategy?
