Do Lords you don't capture die?

So sometimes when you have a massive battle with a lord you take them as prisoner and sometimes you take none. Does this mean they escaped or died in battle? If they escape why cant you see them on the map? I know I should probably look at after battle stats but I am just steamrolling right now and executing a lot of major generals lol
