Siege towers

Can someone explain to me what the point of siege towers is? They take away your ladders delay your assaults and open up vulnerability to enemy catapults. Seems like you are always better off not building these things. Very frustrating that the ai always insists onbuilding 2 of these and ruining your chance of winning a siege assault
