Hey folks! Question about War Sails.

I’m still a new player at Mount & Blade. My friend has the PS+ catalogue so I gave Warband a shot and liked it, I’ll be sure to play it on PC! I’m interested in buying War Sails. Is it possible to rise to power without ever joining a kingdom/ becoming a vassal?

Before I lost my previous playthrough, I was a vassal of Battania and hated the idiotic bureaucracy. Swore I would do it myself from the ground up. Is it possible?
