How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? How to get a good heir/ leveled family?

I’m trying to expand my clan, and make sure that I have a couple possible heirs, and I just wanted to get some tips on how to level up your family? My wife is pretty good as she’s Rhagaea’s daughter Ira I believe. I have a couple of sister in laws that kinda suck and my brother is a decent warrior but lacks in the stewardship/leadership role a bit. My wife is pregnant, and I just want to know of good ways to level them up. My wife and and brother are both governors of a city each.
