How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? I Anderson of Anderson has finally conquered them all at the ripe old age of 64 I've done it even after the great debt I accumulated in my twenties of negative 6 to 7 digits even when I was at war with everyone in one measly town the great old Jalmarys and managed to defend it to the end iv finally managed to kill the damn dirty khuzaits and claim Calradia as mine
