STUCK AT BEGINING OF WARSAILS

I escorted the merchants and fought off two ships in a sea battle . I'm on the Scourge of the Seas quest. It tells me to talk to Gunnar via a golden exclamation point. I go to talk to him and he says thst he is waiting on new." What do I do now? It seems as though there are no obvious prompts and the quest still exists. I need help specifically with advancing this quest...I can't believe I am stuck this early in the game. If anyone has any advice, I'm really desperate. Siege defense lineup deploys benchwarmers after 1.27

Before 1.2.7, most of my starting troops defending the walls in a siege were elite tier troops and could wreck most enemies stepping off the ladders.

After 1.2.7, the game has 100% militia as my starting lineup; those brave fools get utterly wiped out by the elite tier enemies climbing over the walls. By the time my own elite troops show up as reinforcements, the enemy army is swarming inside the settlement and it's game over.

I rarely ever messed around with the sliders before a siege battle, so help a veteran noob: how do I get my elite troops at the start of a siege?

I'm on PC.

edit: 1.2.7, not 1.27

Back when Bannerlord was announced, I vaguely remember that, in the announcement thread, people were discussing the choice of the title "Bannerlord." Does anyone else remember that?
