Loot doesn't cover the men lost in battle in PoP

I kill a dozen of Knights in full plate armor and on fancy horses, then all I can loot is a pair of socks and a couple of broken shields and occasionally a few rusty swords. Looting skill is 3(+1). Is this intended gameplay or am I just unlucky? Should I focus on taking prisoners instead?
