How should I deal with the Marshall's requests?

Hello,

I am currently playing Mount & Blade: Warband, and am really annoyed with the Marshall and his quests, they are awful and inconsistent.

I'd like to know, what kind of disadvantages I'd be dealing with, were I to ignore him. For example, if he calls for me for a campaign and I don't meet him, will I fail the quest and anger some of my companions? And would that reduce and loss of relation with the Marshall?

I don't really mind following him tough, the tasks he gives me then are the real issue. If I follow the Marshall, and he asks for me (to give me one of those little quest, like scouting), can I simply ignore that, don't talk to him and keep following him, until he besieges a city and the quest "Follow the Marshall" succeeds?
