Some questions and any advice going forward

I recently started a new game on 1.7 and last I played was 1.5 or 6, and I see alot have changed. In my new save I was able to get a ton of battaian fian. And fairly early game which my clan is still tier 1, I was able to capture a city that rebelled and I’m using that as my base of operations for now.

If I joined an group as a mercenary would it forfeit my city to that culture/civ if I decided to leave? Is smithing still OP? I been stocking up my garrison with fian champions and it’s starting to add up in money so I’m trying to get more money for workshops. Any advice you give me going forward?
