Disbanded a party but I just...can't take the hero into my party?

What's going on? I can't take the hero into my party manually or otherwise, he's just...sitting there, talking to me. I try to drag him into the party manually and nothing happens, and there is no option to take him to party. Why is this such a complicated process?
