How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Stuck during first playthrough

I'm well into my first playthrough as Sturgia, just became king after Raganvad died in battle. I've taken all of Vlandia and Battania, but now the remaining kingdoms just take turns attacking me. Sometimes all 5 that are left make war on me at once. I'll take armies and take multiple castles and towns, then another kingdom on the other side of the map will push in where I'm not. Then we make peace before I can finish the kingdom, I push back the other side for a while, then peace is made and the cycle repeats.
I have tons of gold so I try recruiting new clans to my kingdom permanently, but it seems like unless there's a significantly positive relation I can't bring them over. Any recommendations on how to complete the takeover?
