What the hell did they do to Fennagan?

Bro used to have 275 in every combat stat and now he has… 50 two handed? 120 athletics? He and Caladog were the gatekeepers of Battanian tournaments, now they’re just battanian recruits with fancy armor. Arwa gutted, Corein gutted, every tournament is weenie hut junior? Stuck during first playthrough

I'm well into my first playthrough as Sturgia, just became king after Raganvad died in battle. I've taken all of Vlandia and Battania, but now the remaining kingdoms just take turns attacking me. Sometimes all 5 that are left make war on me at once. I'll take armies and take multiple castles and towns, then another kingdom on the other side of the map will push in where I'm not. Then we make peace before I can finish the kingdom, I push back the other side for a while, then peace is made and the cycle repeats.
I have tons of gold so I try recruiting new clans to my kingdom permanently, but it seems like unless there's a significantly positive relation I can't bring them over. Any recommendations on how to complete the takeover?
