Any way to assign only certain troop types to a formation?

Hi new player here, question in the title. Let's say I only want my Swordsmen in Formation 1, is there a way to do this with any granularity? I know there's the small icons which allow you to set "preferred types", but is there any way to do it with a bit of precision? Or a mod which allows this? Thanks in advance. What's with the clusterf*ck at the castle gate?

I'm participating in a castle assault and we breached the gate. Now I'm just watching this fight at the castle gate for like the last 10 minutes. It doesn't seem like anybody's getting anywhere. The AI isn't assaulting the castle walls, they're just all trying to cluster in at the gate. So it's like 80 people clustered around the castle gate beating each other.

It's kind of boring now. I'm just waiting for something to happen. I wish I could fast forward.

Is this normally how this goes? It's not my army.
