How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Quick question - Is the current version of Vortex broken?

Finally got around to setting up some mods and I am getting lots of errors in Vortex. I can't even seem to refresh the Load Order. It simply doesn't remove the old mods or add new ones.

Here's one of the many errors that I gott, looks like it's new.

Do y'all normally just install each mod one at a time by hand? Ugh
