How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? (POP) Am I missing Something Here?

Playing POP and trying to get the hang of this mod but I feel like I'm missing something. The archers are so imbalanced and OP that I can hardly participate in my own battles without getting wrecked by even the weakest archer units (I'm level 26). The battles themselves are messy mob brawls with no real strategy or maneuvering. The enemy cav always charges and the archers murder everything. That's every battle. Are there settings or something that I can switch on/off to make this mod work? Or is it just not for me?
