How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Mount and Blade Vanilla question about Rebellion.

Recently heard that if you denounce your oath as a vassal, you lose ALL fiefs which totally sucks. Is the same when you rebel(asking for a fief as Marshall and not receiving it and denouncing from there) because that sounds extremely terrible, unrealistic and a waste of about 95% of my gameplay. What do I do here?
