How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Armor question.

Something I've always wondered. Obviously, better armor is better, but what is like the deduction system. Is it like, i'm wearing +50 to chest, i get hit in the chest with a 60 dmg blow, and i get 15 dmg, discounting other effects and skills? (like some of blood and steel skills)
