Need mount to upgrade

I started playing again with the realistic battle, auto resolve rebalanced and diplomacy mods. I'm playing on 1.8. I last played ~1.5 years ago, I don't remember you needing mounts to upgrade troops that already have them.

Normally you'd need a mount to upgrade a footsoldier to a mounted one and a war horse for higher tier cavalry, once, but now I need a mount/war mount every time I upgrade my troops, even if I already had upgraded them with that tier mount. This means I need 1 mount and 3 war mounts, aka ~5k gold to upgrade just one Khuzait Noble's Son to Khan's Guard/Vlandian Squire to Banner Knight.

It's ridiculous balancing wise, makes no sense realistically, and I don't know if it's a base game change or one of my mods causing it. Anyone got info on this, and perhaps on how to make it not be the case? I can't find any discussion about it for the life of me, but surely it isn't normal.

Back when Bannerlord was announced, I vaguely remember that, in the announcement thread, people were discussing the choice of the title "Bannerlord." Does anyone else remember that? It was a useless topic to discuss, but I kept coming back because I was so hyped about the game and was hoping for more information about it.
