How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? How to organize army. Help!

How do i organize my army once i am already in battle? Example, i have 400 archers, how can i divide them up into 2 groups? When i tr to reorganize, i only seem to transfer them from one group to another instead of dividing them into 2 groups. Is there a video that shows this? Thanks
