How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Did I win?

I'm confused. I turned in the dragon flag, became a vassal for the North, failed the conpriracy quest so everyone declared war. I had already knocked off a clan or two by then, then I finished off the rest except Kuzait. Then I beat Kuzait into submission. Then I got a long cut scene about how I'd brought peace and united everyone. Seems like I beat the game but Kuzait still exists. What gives? I thought I was supposed to conquer the whole map to win.
