How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Robin Hood Mod

I'm speaking out of context, I'm a console player. But the idea of a robin hood mod where you're a bandit and you have hideouts and get place your men placed strategically with bows and crossbows as they come to infiltrate your hideout would be so dope.
