How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? [PoP] Lady Reada went down 2 points in her opinion of me when I, a fellow vassal of Marius Imperator, the man who holds significant territory within the Empire and personally captured Marleons and Sarleon, among many castles, the man who has over 2000 renown and has beaten two hosts of Jatu. Why?!

For real, though. I got her father's permission to court her. She just cold shouldered me out of the gate when I found her.

Does it have to be at a feast? After a tournament? What gives?

She had the most familial connections among the Imperials and I want to have them on my side...

Not that I'm planning anything malevolent, of course. It's been over a year in game and I've garnered some right to rule.
