How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? Can you order troops to lower their shields?

I've tried using the command again and looking for it but I can't seem to find a way to do it. There can't actually not be a way to lower their shields right? If you command them to raise its too annoying to get them to move foward.
