Crossbow units vs. bow units - Unclear what the pro's and con's are of each?

What are the main differences between archers with a bow and with a crossbow. Not counting horse archers. My guess would be:
Bow: Quicker, less damage
Crossbow: Slower, more damage?
Is that correct? Which one is better all things considered?
