STUCK AT BEGINING OF WARSAILS

I escorted the merchants and fought off two ships in a sea battle . I'm on the Scourge of the Seas quest. It tells me to talk to Gunnar via a golden exclamation point. I go to talk to him and he says thst he is waiting on new." What do I do now? It seems as though there are no obvious prompts and the quest still exists. I need help specifically with advancing this quest...I can't believe I am stuck this early in the game. If anyone has any advice, I'm really desperate. Worst part of playing an infantry only character is enemy moral

Nothing worse than 30 looters charging you then 2 of them get killed and they all run away and since you don't have horse you just have to settle for only 2 kills unless your archers are lucky enough to get a couple more.

And even if you do have a horse it's still feels cheap because you can just run after them killing them and they don't do anything except run in a straight line.
