What is fast mode?

ai gets to field three times more men then me

why is it that when I siege a town I can only take like 80 guys at a time while the enemy gets to deploy 240 at once, we are evenly matched in troop totals but for some reason the ai just gets to field more men the me for no reason. What do I do to fix this or is this one of those things developers do cause they don't know how to balance a game without giving ai huge boosts?
