How to improve auto resolve outcomes?

I auto-resolve 90% of the fights I get into, what can I do for better results? Should I find 1-2 companions with high tactics skill and keep them in my party? Will that help? Do I have to assign them into any role? There is no slot for tactics role, is it enough if I just keep them in my party? As for sieges, should I keep a companion with high engineering skill and assign him in the engineering slot? So far Argh

Ok I’ve gone to war with people, made my own independent empire. Haven’t used the dragon banner yet. So far so good but despite my success in winning wars I can never convince anyone to betray their lords. It seems these speech checks are rigged to fail. Do I need more than 100 speech to pass anything?
